The US Energy Independence and Security Act defines a high-performance building as one that “integrates and optimizes on a life cycle basis all major high-performance attributes, including energy conservation, environment, safety, security, durability, accessibility, cost-benefit, productivity, sustainability, functionality, and operational considerations.” Midstate uses this as a basis for deriving performance attributes appropriate to the arrangement and configuration of windows and doors on a building including aesthetics, cost-benefit, economic efficiency, human comfort and health, integration with other building systems, the user interface, and maintenance and renovation requirements over the operational phase of the building lifecycle.
